Lokta paper is made from the bark of the Lokta shrub (Daphne bholua), which thrives in the barren soils of Nepal's Himalayan region due to its cold- and drought-resistant properties.
Like sugarcane, Lokta bark is harvested annually to 30 cm above ground, promoting the growth of three to eight new shoots.
This sustainable method protects forest ecosystems while ensuring a renewable supply of bark, making Lokta paper eco-friendly.
The unique qualities of the Lokta shrub make the paper highly durable—waterproof, moisture- and mildew-resistant, and immune to paper-eating insects.
